Introduction to Stevenage Homes
Stevenage Homes Ltd (known as Stevenage Homes or sometimes as SHL) is a Private Company wholly owned and controlled by Stevenage Borough Council. A board of non-executive directors governs the Company. The Board comprises three Tenants, one Leaseholder, four Council Members and four Independents. The Tenant and Leaseholder Members are elected by FOSTA representatives. The Councillors are nominated by Stevenage Borough Council. The Independents are selected by the other Board members.

The senior executive team of Stevenage Homes, which reports to the Board, comprises a Chief Executive, a Director of Housing Management, a Director of Housing Technical Services, a Director of Business Excellence and a Director of Finance and Compliance. There are approximately 280 staff in SHL; about 150 accommodated in the Atrium in Daneshill House in the town centre, about 60 based at the Building Maintenance Depot in Cavendish Road, and the remainder being field based staff – caretakers, supported housing officers and mobile wardens.
Stevenage Homes is responsible for the management and maintenance of the Council’s housing stock. This involves the company in carrying out the day-to-day management of the properties such as:
- Managing the housing register
- Letting empty properties
- Repairs & Maintenance
- Rent and Service Charge collection
- Enforcing tenancy conditions
- Major Improvements to the Housing Stock
- The Decent Homes Programme
- Planning major investment (in agreement with the Council)
- Promoting tenant involvement
