How to save energy
Almost everyone uses far more energy than they need. Not only does this waste your money but it also damages the environment.
You can save money and follow the environment by following these simple guidelines:
- When buying an appliance, make sure it has a good energy-efficiency rating. 'A' is the most efficient, 'G' is the least efficient
- Use energy-saving light bulbs. Not only do they save energy, but they also last a great deal longer. Use these in the lights that are on the most to save the most energy, usually the living room and kitchen
- Turn your central-heating thermostat down by just 1°C. It could save you up to 10% on your fuel bills. Turn down the thermostats on individal radiators
- Close all your curtains at night as this prevents a lot of heat escaping through your windows. Leave a window open slightly if you have problems with condensation in your home
- Put aluminium foil behind fitted radiators to keep the heat from being lost through the walls. You can buy special foil from DIY shops
You can also save water by following these simple steps:
- Do not leave taps running
- Do not use hosepipes
- Have a shower rather than a bath
- Wash your car or water your garden and indoor plants using old washing-up water or bathwater
- Prevent pipes and tanks from bursting by checking that pipes are lagged and tanks are insulated
