The Mayor of Stevenage has joined us in commending local resident, Aaron Briggs, for securing an apprentice position with Apollo, where he will be working on our £90m programme to improve homes.
He is the first of many apprentices that will be taken on by contractors completing our major works programme.
Lorraine O’Brien, chief executive of Stevenage Homes said: “Stevenage Homes is very proud to support apprenticeship schemes and encourage young people to develop skills that will help them build careers. All of the contractors who are delivering our major works programme are committed to investing in Stevenage’s community by employing local people and taking on apprentices like Aaron.”
Aaron was living in a hostel in Stevenage when the opportunity arose to apply for the position. He beat 240 young people to the role following a challenging application process.
Aaron explains: “I was living in a night shelter when I heard about the Apollo apprenticeship through Hertfordshire Connexions and, because you can only stay in the hostel for five nights each week, I wasn’t about when the letter came inviting me to the interview. I ended up getting it on the morning of the interview but managed to make it just in time! I’ve now got my own place and I’m really enjoying working with Apollo.”
Councillor Sue Myson, Mayor of Stevenage, said: “It is extremely important that we provide employment and training opportunities for our young people, so I am very encouraged to see firms such as Apollo providing apprenticeships. Aaron is certainly taking advantage of the opportunity which has been provided for him. He is keen to learn new skills and I wish him every success in his future career.”
