Stevenage Homes staff are encouraging residents of the town to join them in walking up to 10 kilometres to raise money for local dementia sufferers and their families on Saturday 24 September.

As the Alzheimer’s Society celebrates its tenth year of Memory Walks Stevenage will be holding its first Memory Walk on 24 September. The event is being organised by Stevenage Homes’ staff, who voted for the Alzheimer’s Society to be the company’s charity of the year.  All the money raised by the event will be put towards funding support for local people living with dementia and their families.

Stevenage’s Memory Walk includes two walks; a one mile walk around St Nicholas Park, which is wheelchair accessible and ideal for people with disabilities, or those who have young children, and for those who like more of a challenge, a 10 kilometre circular walk from the park  around the countryside between Halls Green and Walkern . Well behaved dogs are welcome to join in too. Both walks start at 10am.

Organiser Richard Field said,
‘Lots of people in Stevenage and North Hertfordshire have someone close to them that is affected by dementia or who they have lost to the disease. This is an opportunity to remember them and raise money to support sufferers and their carers. Everybody is welcome to join in.’

Jade Rolph, Alzheimer's Society Community Fundraiser for Hertfordshire added: "In Hertfordshire, there are already more than 13, 000 people with dementia. By 2021, that number is likely to reach more than 17, 000.

"It is really exciting to have a Memory Walk in Stevenage and we hope that local people will support the walk and make it a great success.

"We rely on income from events like this to continue our vital services."

To take part in the walk register online at www.memorywalk.org.uk/stevenage or contact Richard Field on 01438 242947 . Registration forms can also be collected from Stevenage Homes’ customer service centre in Danestrete, Stevenage
