What we are responsible for

We are generally responsible for structural repairs to your home, for repairs to essential supplies (water, gas, electricity etc) or any repairs where there may be a risk to health or safety.

Where the resident has caused the damage they may be asked to pay for the repairs.

We are responsible for:

  • Repairing and maintaining the structure of the property (i.e. chimneys, roofs, walls, floors and stairs). 
  • External parts to the property.
  • Fittings originally provided by Stevenage Homes or the Stevenage Borough Council.
  • Internal fixtures such as sanitary ware and kitchen units.
  • All pipes, wiring and fixtures and fittings for heating, power and lighting, drainage and mains operated smoke detectors, skirting, worktops and floor tiles .
  • Preservation of common areas in flats or maisonettes.
  • Upkeep of communal gardens and open areas around Council properties.
  • Carrying out gas safety checks at least once a year for every home which has a gas supply. 
  • Fences and walls provided by Stevenage Homes or Stevenage Borough Council.
  • Steps and main paths that lead to the front or back doors (not garden paths or patios). 
  • Brick outhouses, stores or sheds supplied by Stevenage Homes or Stevenage Borough Council.
  • Door entry systems, lifts, common stairways, shared TV aerials.

In addition where a tenant is 60+ or disabled and there is no other help readily available Stevenage Homes will:

  • Ease internal doors e.g. when new carpets are fitted.
  • Repair or replace minor fixtures eg. coat hooks. 
  • Reset trip switches and replace light bulbs, fluorescent tubes and starters.
  • Initial attempts to clear blockages in wastes, toilets or gullies.
  • Renewing cylinder jackets where needed.
  • Assist with action to prevent and control condensation.
  • Repair loose tiles on concrete floors.
  • Replace clothes posts, clothes lines or rotary dryers. 
  • Replace dustbins.
  • Reseal baths
  • Replace toilet seats
