Living in sheltered housing

Silkin Court photo

Sheltered housing is a friendly, warm and welcoming community where you can live independently.  You have your own self-contained accommodation, with the reassurance of an experienced supporting housing officer on hand to offer help, support and advice alongside emergency assistance as and when required.  Above all you are able to maintain your privacy when you wish and can choose the level of contact from your supported housing officer.

A sheltered housing scheme is made up of a group of unfurnished flats, and in some cases bungalows for older or disabled people.  Most properties have one bedroom but there are a number of studio flats and a few two-bedroom properties.

Each home is fully equipped with an emergency alarm system so that you have the peace of mind that help is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.  Click below for more information on the emergency alarm system.

About your emergency alarm system

What does the supported housing officer do?

The supported housing officer oversees the day to day running of the scheme and provides support to the people living there by:

  • Welcoming and helping new residents to settle into their home.
  • Making contact as agreed by the resident.
  • Answering emergency calls and obtaining assistance from Doctors, family and/ or any emergency service that may be required.
  • Encouraging social activities and the use of the shared facilities that helps to provide a neighbourly and supportive community.
  • Giving advice on services available, including personal and nursing care, meals, shopping, cleaning and transport.
  • Arranging services to help residents live independently in their homes.
  • Giving advice on benefits available and assisting with the completion of forms if required.
  • Overseeing the safety, security and maintenance of the scheme and the management of the shared areas.

A supported housing officer is usually at each scheme during the day, Monday to Friday.  At all times, when the supported housing officer is not at the scheme, the alarm system is switched through to the Careline Centre who will answer any alarm calls.  Emergency help and support will then be provided by an experienced mobile supported housing officer.

Unfortunately, the supported housing officer is unable to provide any nursing or personal care but will be able to provide you with advice on where you can get help.

The role of the supported housing officer is to provide support and advice on a general basis and this is not intended to replace the contact and support given by family and friends.  It is intended that by working together, you can remain independent, safe, happy and secure in your own home.
